K9 Vajra-T Defence Cooperation

India and South Korea have expanded defence cooperation through the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer programme. The K9 Vajra-T is an Indian variant of the South Korean K9 Thunder 155 mm self-propelled tracked artillery gun.

K9 Vajra-T Programme
The K9 Vajra-T is manufactured in India by Larsen & Toubro under a technology transfer agreement with Hanwha Aerospace. The production facility is located at Hazira in Gujarat. The system includes at least 50-60% Indian components.

Procurement and Fleet Strength
The first contract for 100 K9 Vajra-T guns was signed in May 2017 for ₹4,500 crore. Deliveries were completed ahead of schedule in 2021. A second contract for 100 additional guns was signed in 2024 for ₹7,629 crore. A proposed order for 300 more guns is linked to a ₹23,000 crore modernisation programme.
